Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of vinsip.app and the VinSip app, both operated by Vast Flow LLP. Using either means you accept them. They are written to be read, so the sections that constrain you are as plain as the ones that constrain us.

What this service is

VinSip is a wine directory and a wine reference site, plus an app that identifies wine from a photograph and suggests bottles. It is an information service and nothing more.

We do not sell wine, hold stock, take bookings, process orders or act as an agent for any venue listed here. A transaction you make after finding a venue on this site is between you and that venue, and we are not a party to it.

Accuracy, and its limits

Venue details — hours, addresses, phone numbers, price bands and ratings — come from public sources and are correct only as of the build date shown on the page. Businesses close, move and change their hours without telling anybody, so treat every listing as a starting point and confirm before you travel.

The wine guides and region pages are edited reference material, not professional advice. Appellation rules, duty rates and labelling requirements change; where we quote a number we name the body that publishes it and link to it so you can check the current value yourself.

The app's wine recognition is a statistical model working from a photograph. It will sometimes name the wrong producer, the wrong vintage or the wrong wine entirely, particularly on a damaged label, an unusual bottle or a poor photograph. Do not rely on it for anything where being wrong has a cost — an auction bid, an insurance valuation, an allergy decision.

Alcohol, age and responsibility

This service is intended for people old enough to buy alcohol where they live. Nothing here encourages consumption, and nothing here is health advice. The alcohol, calorie and duty figures we publish are labelling and tax facts.

If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are taking medication, the question of whether to drink is one for a clinician and not for a wine site.

What you may and may not do

You may read, quote and link to anything on this site, including in an article, a forum post or an AI-generated answer. A link back is appreciated and is the only thing we ask.

You may not scrape the venue database wholesale to rebuild it elsewhere, present our computed figures as your own data, or use the site to send automated traffic that degrades it for other readers. Reasonable, attributed quotation is not scraping and never has been.

Intellectual property

The editorial text, the computed statistics, the design and the VinSip name are ours. Venue names, trade marks and the underlying place data belong to their respective owners, and the map tiles are © OpenStreetMap contributors and CARTO, used under their licences.

Subscriptions

The app offers an optional paid subscription, billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Those stores handle the payment, the renewal and the refund, and their terms govern each. Cancel through the store rather than through us; we cannot cancel a store subscription on your behalf.

Availability, changes to the data, and what a build date means

The site is static: every page is generated ahead of time and served as a file. That makes it fast and hard to break, and it means the venue data on a page is a snapshot taken when the page was built rather than a live query. The date given alongside the figures is that snapshot.

We rebuild when the underlying data changes materially. Between rebuilds, a shop can close and its page will still show it. That is the trade a static directory makes, and stating it is more honest than implying a freshness we do not have.

We may add, change or remove sections of the site without notice, including removing a city or a venue type entirely if we cannot keep it accurate.

If you run a venue listed here

Being listed costs nothing and requires nothing from you. We did not ask your permission, because the information used is what you already publish about yourself; if you would rather not appear, say so and the listing goes at the next build, with no conditions and no attempt to talk you out of it.

You cannot pay to rank higher, and you cannot pay to have a competitor ranked lower. If somebody contacts you claiming to sell either, they are not us.

A correction is not a favour we grant. If the hours, the address or the phone number on your page are wrong, tell us and we fix them, whether or not you would rather be listed at all.

The numbers on this site, and how far to trust them

Two kinds of number appear here and they carry different weight. The computed ones — Sunday trading shares, median opening and closing times, rating averages, the city-versus-country comparisons — are arithmetic over the venue rows shown on the same page, and they are exactly as accurate as the underlying venue profiles. If a shop publishes wrong hours to Google, our median is wrong in the same way, and we cannot detect that from the outside.

The regulatory ones — duty rates, VAT, purchase ages, trading-hours law — are quoted from the body that publishes them, named in the same sentence, with a link. They were verified on the date shown on the policy, and rates change on their own schedule: a UK duty figure is superseded every February, and an EU labelling rule can change with a single regulation. Follow the link before you rely on a figure for anything commercial.

Where the two disagree with each other, or with what you see in a shop, the shop is right and we are out of date. Tell us and we will fix it.

Links to other sites

We link out to regulators, statutory instruments, standards bodies and venue websites. Those are not ours, we do not control what they publish, and a link is not an endorsement of anything beyond the specific fact it supports.

Venue websites in particular come from public place data and are reproduced as published. Some are stale, some redirect somewhere unexpected, and a few will have lapsed and been re-registered by somebody else. Treat an outbound venue link with the same caution you would treat any link you did not type yourself.

If something here is wrong

Report it. A specific report — the URL, the claim, and what the correct position is — gets read and acted on, usually within a day. We correct errors in place rather than quietly deleting the page, and where a correction changes the meaning of a passage we say what changed.

This applies to the editorial content as much as to the listings. A wine guide that states a rule that has since changed is worse than no guide, because somebody will act on it.

Stable URLs, and what happens to a page we retire

A page that gets cited is only useful while its URL still resolves, so we treat URLs as part of the contract rather than as an implementation detail. When a page is renamed or merged into another, the old address becomes a permanent redirect to the page that replaced it. We do not delete a URL that has ever been published and leave a 404 behind it.

Where content is consolidated, the redirect points at the page that actually answers the question the old one answered — not at the section hub, which is the lazy version of the same move and the reason so many citations rot into a category listing. If a claim disappears entirely because it turned out to be wrong, the page says so rather than quietly losing the sentence.

The figures on the directory pages are recomputed on every build and will change as venues open, close and revise their hours. If you are citing one, cite it with the date shown on the page. The regulatory figures change on their own published schedules, and each is linked to the register that governs it so you can check the current value without coming back here.

Liability

The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from a listing that turned out to be wrong, a venue that had closed, a recognition result that was mistaken, or the site being unavailable. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Changes, law and contact

We may change these terms; the date at the top says when we last did. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.
